Becoming the “Ultimate Partner” to Run Through Life Together A Story of Connection with My Wife of 25 Years
Interview Relay 2nd Run: Stories of “Connections Between People” Born Through the Tokyo Marathon
This time, we introduce a story of chihhung, who reaffirmed the deep bond with his wife of 25 years as they tackled the streets of Tokyo together.

Overlapping Footsteps: Running and Wandering Together
This March in Tokyo, a subtle chill lingered in the air, yet it could not dampen the simmering anticipation at the starting line before the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Standing amidst the crowd with my wife, we double-checked each other’s gear. As our eyes met, no words were needed. It was the profound emotional bond of twenty-five years as husband and wife—a sense of belonging to one another that goes beyond mere words.
As the starting gun signaled the commencement, the streets of Tokyo transformed into an endless red carpet. Running through the bustling district of Ginza, I watched my wife’s steady stride and felt a fresh sense of wonder. I saw a silhouette of focus and fortitude that I rarely glimpsed in the quietude of daily life.
At times, I quickened my pace to capture her image as she pressed forward; at others, we ran side by side. It was like a correspondence between a “newcomer” and an “old acquaintance”—a journey with a lifelong best friend through a new landscape. By the time we reached the great lantern of Kaminarimon, the world seemed to consist only of our rhythmic breathing and the echo of our footsteps upon the asphalt.
The Art of Mutual Support Learned from the City
The true beauty of the Tokyo Marathon lies not in the finishing time, but in the atmosphere of city-wide support. The spirit of “Omotenashi” (hospitality) overflows in every corner, with locals welcoming every runner like a returning hero. This sense of being embraced by the entire city is something truly unique to Tokyo.
Surrounded by this passionate crowd, we kept moving forward. When our strength began to wane at several bridges around the 30-kilometer mark, I looked over and saw my wife—exhausted as she must have been—still waving and smiling at the cheering squads.
In that instant, a realization dawned upon me. I was moved by her ability to maintain tenderness and grace even in the most difficult moments. She became my guiding master on the course, teaching me something far more important than the race itself.
Stepping into the Gallery of Grandeur
As we finally turned onto Gyoko-dori in Marunouchi and the red-brick heritage of Tokyo Station came into view, the surge of emotion was beyond description.
“It feels like we’ve stepped into a scene from a movie.”
That magnificent vista of the finish line rendered every hardship sacred. We crossed the line together and held each other in a tight embrace. In that moment, I felt we were no longer just a married couple; we were comrades—the ultimate partners—who had completed a lifelong odyssey together. These 42.195 kilometers were not just about the finish line; they were a precious time that allowed us to rediscover each other’s radiance.

Beyond the Finish Line
The 42 kilometers and 25 years of marriage—the intersection of these two journeys has fundamentally changed my perspective. I realized that true strength isn’t about “winning alone,” but about the resilience found in acknowledging our weaknesses and overcoming them together.
I now truly feel that life, like a marathon, is not just about where you arrive, but about who is by your side and the time you share. By learning from my wife’s example on the course, I became more honest with myself. I stopped worrying only about my own pace and began to cherish our “shared rhythm.”
My selfish anxieties and pride have faded, replaced by a deep sense of peace. Now, even in life’s hardest moments when I am forced to stop, I can find value in that stillness. Every step forward—and every moment of rest—has meaning within the masterpiece of the life we are creating together.
Life is Measured by How Much Our Hearts Resonate
The message I want to share through this story is a simple yet profound truth: The real achievement in life is not measured by time, but by how deeply your heart resonates with the person running beside you.
Running is more than a physical challenge. Think of life as a “grand gallery.” The moments you stop because of the struggle are actually opportunities to appreciate the kindness of others and the beauty around you. Every footprint is a brushstroke in the masterpiece you are painting with someone else.
I don’t run to escape from daily life; I run to savor this one-and-only life to the fullest and to find the beauty and strength that reside in human connection.
