This time, we introduce a story of YOSHI. He fulfilled a heartfelt promise to “run the Tokyo Marathon together” by wearing the blue cap his beloved wife had worn.
Started Running Together to Stay Active
My journey with running began with my wife. After the pandemic, we started running to get back into shape. What began as a simple few-kilometer jog gradually grew into a shared dream: to one day participate together in Japan’s premier race, the Tokyo Marathon.
In 2024, my wife completed her very first race, the Shibuya – Omotesando Women’s Run. However, just a week later, her health took a sudden turn. She was hospitalized and diagnosed with stage 4 lung adenocarcinoma. From her hospital window, she could see the Tama River—our usual running route. She fought through her treatment with the goal of returning to those paths and eventually crossing the finish line of the Tokyo Marathon with me. After a courageous nine-month battle, she passed away on January 8, 2025.
Surpassing Limits for a Loved One
Determined to honor our promise, I entered the lottery for the Tokyo Marathon 2026 for the first time—and I won. I’ve never been a lucky person, so I truly believe this was a gift from my wife in heaven, who always had better luck.
On race day, I wore the same blue running cap she wore during her first and last race, the Shibuya – Omotesando Women’s Run. Together, we ran through the streets of Tokyo and passed through the finish gate just as we had planned. That day, my wife was there as the 39,001st runner, racing through the heart of the city by my side.
Whenever I felt I had hit my limit and wanted to give up, thinking of her gave me the strength to push past those boundaries.
Chasing the Same Goal with Individual Hearts
While this is my personal story of participating in the Tokyo Marathon, I am certain that every single runner has their own unique journey. Everyone carries their own deep-seated emotions as they head toward that same finish line. To me, this is the greatest appeal of the Tokyo Marathon: runners from all over the world coming together, each with their own story, yet all united by a single goal.
